Juan holds an M.S. and a PhD in Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation from the University of Twente, the Netherlands and a bachelor’s degree in Cadastral engineering and Geodesy from the District University of Bogota, Colombia. He has worked in Vienna, Laos and Colombia for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime where he most recently lead the Information team of the Alternative Development project. He also worked in the private sector in GIS/Remote Sensing in the Netherlands. His interest is in applying geoinformation science and remote sensing to understand real world problems. He holds advanced skills on the use of multisource remote sensing (optical, ms, radar and Lidar) and spatial databases for mapping and monitoring of land cover and land cover change with emphasis on forest resources in tropical areas. He has led the implementation of forestry and agricultural surveys using mobile devices and internet applications and has great interest in implementing geospatial methods and algorithms using programming languages.
