Science meets Theatre: Soil, Society and Soul

Performance by Freiburg Scientific Theatre

theatre“Soil, Society and Soul” is a journey around the globe that captures the drama of Sustainable Development and Landscapes in the simple stories of people’s every-day lives. From survival on remote farms to the frenzy of mass consumption, the play addresses complex governance issues such as unsustainable supply chains, soil degradation, the limitations of market-based solutions, and the difficulties of public participation, in a humorous, tongue-in-cheek manner which will bring tears of laughter and sorrow to spectators.

The award winning Freiburg Scientific Theatre is a group of young sustainability experts from around the world, which grew out of the renowned Masters of Environmental Governance Program at the University of Freiburg, Germany. The young researchers use theatre to promote and facilitate inter-cultural dialogue on the topic of sustainability. By appealing to emotions, the group engages audience members at a deeper level than is possible with traditional science communication methods. Through this process, a new platform for dialogue and reflection is created; in which participants no longer speak from their knowledge of sustainability, but their experience of it. Since its inception in 2012, the Freiburg Scientific Theatre has performed at many different events throughout Europe, including academic conferences, public festivals and government sustainability program launches.
