Mark van der Wal is a Senior Ecologist at IUCN Netherlands with a background in tropical ecology. He has 25 years of international experience on the cutting edge of conservation and development. Half of this period was spent on conservation projects in Colombia, Honduras, Eastern Indonesia and Cameroon. With IUCN NL his focus has been on the strengthening the conservation initiatives of local civil society and legal compliance monitoring of the private sector. Mr. van der Wal conducted monitoring and back stopping missions to conservation projects in Central America, Indonesia, PNG, Madagascar and many African countries. He considers the domestic fuel problem to be one of the major threats to biodiversity and the life support system.
