Mitsuru Osaki is Professor Emeritus of Research Faculty of Agriculture, Hokkaido University and was Professor of Graduate School of Agriculture, Hokkaido University from 2006 to 2017. He is one of the leading scientists in the field of wetland and peatland, with rich experiences in GHG emissions/removals, carbon sequestration, wild fire and also rehabilitation/conservation in these ecosystems through many international projects and programs for over 40 years.
More recently from 2008 to 2014, Professor Osaki was a Project Leader of a JST-JICA Project on “Wild Fire and Carbon Management in Peat-Forest in Indonesia.” This collaborative research project between the Japan and the Indonesia contributed to REDD+ operation and inclusive MRV system to estimate carbon stock and flux while doing extensive capacity building through on-site training, exchanges of researchers and symposia in the developing country. The project at the end yielded to concrete policy inputs to the Indonesian government, inventory manuals and reports, and the first book of tropical peatland titled “Tropical Peatland Ecosystems” from Springer (2016).
Professor Osaki is the President of “Japan Peatland Society”, which is nominated as IPS membership. He has also been developing collaboration program and project with BRG (Peatland Restoration Agency, Indonesia) -JU (Hokkaido University, Kyoto University, and RINH)-JICA, for which BRG-JU made MOU in 2016.
