Bernadinus Steni Sugiarto

Bernadinus Steni Sugiarto is an environmental and human rights lawyer with the Earth Innovation Institute in Indonesia. He has been providing legal assistance for indigenous peoples and local communities on natural resources and climate for over 10 years. He has published analyses on free prior, informed consent in Indonesia, the legal framework of indigenous peoples’ rights in Indonesia, the legal and political debate related to indigenous peoples’ rights in Indonesia, and using human rights indicators to monitor REDD+. Within the past years, Mr. Steni has worked in the areas of climate change, particularly land tenure, safeguards and REDD+ in Indonesia. He drafted the National REDD+ Safeguards (PRISAI) in 2012. Prior to joining the Earth Innovation Institute, Mr. Steni worked with HuMa (Association for Community and Ecology-Based Law Reform). He graduated from Gadjah Mada University in Indonesia.
