After presenting an overview of findings from each of three new research monographs on African agriculture and climate change (East Africa, West Africa, and Southern Africa), the researchers will explore one of the issues revealed in the analyses that resulted from taking a spatial approach that allowed them to see the impact on landscapes.

  • The good: some areas will become better for agriculture.
  • The bad: some areas will become worse for agriculture.
  • The ugly: if the bad are bad enough and the good are good enough (and policies are not in place to help people transition), internal migration and land grabs could be the result

Issues related to governance will be discussed, as well as issues related to food security and adaptation to climate change. Three key sector- or issue-specific questions the panel will address:

  1. What will the impact of climate change be on food security (national food self-sufficiency) at the national level in Africa?
  2. What African countries (and what parts of those countries) will face potential migratory stresses due to climate change?
  3. What are some potential policy changes or technological improvements to preserve sensitive environment areas in the landscape while helping farmers grow in productivity while adapting to climate change?
