Since the late morning of Saturday 19th of July there is no doubt that forests are an integral part of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals designed by the United Nations Open Working Group. An innovative game now provides a platform to discuss how exactly forests can contribute to sustainable development – and what it is […]

Some conservation finance strategies feature taxes on nature’s benign, and arguably educational, uses. This applies to a recent proposal to extract payment from producers of nature films and also to past efforts to raise entrance fees to protected areas. We argue that, as they are currently formulated, it is misleading to label these proposals as […]

We investigated the implementation and sustainability of village conservation agreements and village conservation grants facilitated by an integrated conservation and development project (ICDP) around the Kerinci Seblat National Park, Sumatra, Indonesia, 5 years after the project closed. Forty-three percent of agreement actions (n=180) and 30% of grant activities (n=74) were sustained. Informants identified numerous factors […]

Common lands provide smallholder farmers in Africa with firewood, timber, and feed for livestock, and they are used to complement human diets through the collection of edible nontimber forest products (NTFPs). Farmers have developed coping mechanisms, which they deploy at times of climatic shocks. We aimed to analyze the importance of NTFPs in times of […]
