The UN-REDD Programme is pleased to announce the launch of the first online version of its succesful REDD+ Academy courses and accompanying Learning Journals, making this valuable knowledge resource available to REDD+ policymakers, practitioners and communities worldwide.
The REDD+ Academy was designed to support developing countries to gain the knowledge and capacities needed to deliver REDD+ at the scale required to match the global climate change mitigation challenge. A year ago, the UN-REDD Programme launched the first REDD+ Academy — organized as a live, regional learning forum in Asia-Pacific. Since then, the REDD+ Academy has expanded to Africa and the Latin America/Caribbean regions, and has included the participation of nearly 500 representatives of 49 UN-REDD Programme partner countries. On 25 November, the REDD+ Academy was launched as an online e-course, supported by accompanying Learning Journals — developed with the support of UNITAR’s UN CC:Learn Secretariat.
In a video statement launching the REDD+ Academy e-course, Achim Steiner, United Nations Environment Programme Executive Director called the e-course a, “state-of-the-art overview of REDD+ planning and implementation, which has been developed by some of the world’s leading REDD+ experts.”
Tim Christophersen of the UN-REDD Programme and Senior Programme Officer, Forests and Climate Change (UNEP) said, “The main goal of the REDD+ Academy is to broaden the knowledge base and the base for implementation of REDD+. In each of our partner countries we want to enable people in key economic and policy sectors to become REDD+ champions.”

REDD+ Academy Learning Journals
To support continued learning both during the REDD+ Academy live and online training sessions and beyond, the UN-REDD Programme and its agencies (FAO, UNDP and UNEP), with support from the UN CC:Learn Secretariat, have developed the REDD+ Academy Learning Journals. Addressing twelve key REDD+ topics [1], the Learning Journals are packaged as a coherent whole and offer introductory information, detailed accounts and learning exercises designed to build capacity for REDD+ throughout the world.
The Learning Journals lead learners across the landscape of REDD+, from the carbon cycle and drivers of deforestation to approaches to finance and stakeholder engagement. They also explore technical issues, such as the establishment of national forest monitoring systems and processes to address REDD+ safeguards.
Designed to be used either holistically or as individual modules — depending on the learners’ interest — the REDD+ Academy Learning Journals offer a level of comprehensiveness and flexibility that matches the diverse needs of REDD+ practitioners.
They will be available online, from 25 November,in English, French and Spanish on the UN-REDD Programme’s knowledge platform — The Online Collaborative Workspace.
REDD+ Academy e-course
In order to widen the reach of the REDD+ Academy trainings and grant access to high quality learning on REDD+ to an unlimited number of participants, the UN-REDD Programme is also pleased to launch the REDD+ Academy e-course, developed with support from the UN CC:Learn Secretariat.
Based on the learning materials developed for the face-to-face REDD+ Academy trainings, the REDD+ Academy e-course is a self-paced and open to all free of charge. Access the course here.
In describing the REDD+ Academy learning materials, Achim Steiner, United Nations Under-Secretary-General and United Nations Environment Programme Executive Director stated, “The modules presented will equip you with the requisite knowledge to better understand the various components of REDD+ planning and implementation, and provide you with tools to promote the implementation of national REDD+ activities in your country. About the REDD+ Academy
The REDD+ Academy is a coordinated initiative of the UN-REDD Programme and the UNEP Environmental Education and Training Unit, which provides developing countries with systematic, focused capacity development in order to deliver REDD+ on the ground. The REDD+ Academy is a comprehensive response to capacity building needs identified by developing countries receiving UN-REDD Programme support. The REDD+ Academy also empowers national “REDD+ champions” with the requisite knowledge and skills to promote the implementation of REDD+ activities in their respective countries.

UN CC:Learn is a partnership of more than 30 multilateral organizations supporting countries to design and implement systematic, recurrent and results-oriented climate change learning.
