Scientific Officer, Institute for Environment and Sustainability
Giacomo Grassi has been a scientific officer at the IES since 2005. He leads the activities on Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) in the FORESTMOD Action. This includes the responsibility of the LULUCF sector of the EU greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory, the scientific and technical support to EC services and EU countries on LULUCF monitoring and reporting issues, the contribution to the design and implementation of LULUCF policies at EU level, and the coordination of the Carbon Budget Model (CBM) forest modeling activities in the FORESTMOD Action. He actively participates to the LULUCF negotiations within the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). He acts as expert reviewer of GHG inventories for the UNFCCC, and as coordinating lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) “Revised 2013 Supplementary Methods and Good Practice Guidance under the Kyoto Protocol”. He holds a PhD in Forest Ecology from the University of Bologna (Italy, 1999). His research interests started with forest ecophysiology and silviculture, and then expanded to the carbon balance of forest ecosystems and their role in mitigating climate change.
