Paro, Bhutan
Photographer’s comment: “In the fertile Paro valley, young monks watch the river swell following heavy summer rains. Bhutan’s constitution states that 60% of the country’s land shall always remain under forest cover. The country’s healthy forests help generate rains and maintain soils, insect and bird populations which, in turn, enable its productive agro-ecological systems to flourish. As part of their Buddhist faith, Bhutanese farmers often ask permission of the spirits of the land before plowing or planting.”
