Mona–Madre de Dios, Peru
Photographer’s comment: “Mona, a rescued red howler monkey (Alouatta seniculus) from Amazon Shelter rehabilitation center in Tambopata, Madre de Dios. The red howler monkey – or “coto”, as it is known locally – is often targeted by hunters for bushmeat, resulting in many young howlers becomming orphaned and dependent on humans for their survival. Once acclimated to this situation, reintroduction into the wild can be quite difficult, or in some cases impossible.”
