Integrated rice and fish farms in Ziro, Arunachal Pradesh, India
Photographer’s comment: “High up in the mountains of Arunachal Pradesh in India, the Ziro Valley is home to the indigenous Apatani tribe, who have traditionally practised mixed farming by water-logging paddy fields and simultaneously raising fish in the water contained within paddy channels. The Apatanis make this unique dual farming practice sustainable by adding household animal and plant waste to the water, which doubles as manure for the paddy as well as food for the fish. The innovative practice is directed at maximising productivity (given the community’s limited land resources), while minimising the depletion of forests for the sake of livelihood.”
