The Happy Pastoralist – Gujarat, India
Photographer’s comment: “Pandi Kaka from the village of Erandavali in the Banni grasslands of Gujarat, India stands with his prize winning buffalo bull. Known for their high milk yields and sturdiness, the Banni buffalo is now a registered breed, but was developed by pastoralists in this part of the world over hundreds of years of careful breeding. Now combined with free-range grazing and dairy cooperatives, pastoralists are on their way to get rights to their commons under the Forest Rights Act, 2006 which will take this system further towards sustainability.“
