“Many consider conservation as a matter of only the biological sciences. I say rubbish – it’s political.” Thus, an hour into the first round of technical sessions, panelist Edmund Barrow of the IUCN framed the entire context surrounding the 2013 Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) in Warsaw, Poland. Also in Warsaw, in a move described as […]

Through the lens of the beautiful Gunung Halimun Salak National Park area in Java – and the lives of those who live there – we explore just what a ‘landscape approach’ means, as a way to reconcile conservation, agriculture, development and industry in a single area, and ensure we feed the earth’s growing population while […]

A recent study of two villages in Cameroon indicates that small farmers there are not far from having the capacity to make REDD+ projects work in their communities. As the links between agriculture and climate change are discussed at the COP19 global climate conference and at the Global Landscapes Forum, the research shows how projects […]

I came to the Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) to learn. To learn from the technical experts, and from those who know how things look on the ground. I am confident that the landscapes forum is the right place to be. Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) has been mentioned a number of times at the GLF, and is […]

It all started with a simple exchange: learn a few words in the language of someone from outside of your region. A government advisor from India taught members of the Guatemalan Ministry of Agriculture “Namaste.” A delegate from Mali learned how researchers from Kenya say drought (“ukame”) and hunger (“njaa”). And as a program leader […]

‘Landscape’ and related phrases such as ‘landscape approach’ are increasingly emerging in international policy, practice, and research discussions. At the first ever Global Landscapes Forum this weekend, during the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP19) meeting in Warsaw, landscape concepts will be given a full airing before climate change negotiators. Of course, […]
