The enthusiastic launch of Initiative 20×20 last Sunday at the Global Landscape Forum (held alongside the UN Climate Change Conference in Lima, Peru) sent a clear signal that restoring degraded land is winning major support from governments and even private investors….During a Global Landscapes Forum session organized by CIAT with the CGIAR Research Program on Water, Land and Ecosystems, panelists talked about the importance of securing political and financial commitments for efforts like 20×20.

Discussion Session “Securing Rights as a Climate Change Mitigation Strategy” at the Global Landscapes Forum
During a discussion session at the 2014 Global Landscapes Forum in Lima, Peru, the Rights and Resources Initiative (RRI), the World Resources Institute, and the Governance, Environment and Markets Initiative at Yale presented research linking secure community forest rights with decreased deforestation and increased carbon storage. …The session began with a short video highlighting the connection between Indigenous Peoples, local communities and climate change, and a summary of Securing Rights, Combating Climate Change.

Approaching climate-smart agriculture from a perspective of systems

The world’s population is expected to exceed 9 billion by 2050. For some countries, this will double. FAO estimates that global agricultural production will have to increase by 60% to meet increased demand, driven by population growth and diet changes. On the other hand, climate change is already negatively affecting forestry and agriculture presenting a triple challenge around food security and nutrition, adaptation to climate change and contribution to climate change mitigation…At a session organized by the World Agroforestry Centre and FAO at the Global Landscapes Forum, researchers, policy makers, development practitioners examined factors make climate-smart agriculture the answer to addressing food security, adaptation and mitigation challenges.

ICRAF Launches Climate-Smart Landscapes Publication at GLF
A book titled ‘Climate-Smart Landscapes: Multifunctionality in Practice’ was launched on the sidelines of the 2014 Global Landscapes Forum (GLF), which convened in Lima, Peru, on 6-7 December 2014. The book, whose publication was led by the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF), brings together research and case studies by 86 authors from 44 institutions on the tools, methods and pathways used to create sustainable multi-functional landscapes, particularly in the fight against climate change.

Book launch – Climate Smart Landscapes: Multifunctionality in Practice
Today marks the launch of Climate Smart Landscapes: Multifunctionality in Practice at the Global Landscapes Forum in Peru. …Bioversity International scientists Fabrice DeClerck and Natalia Estrada-Carmona have also contributed a chapter in collaboration with researchers from the Landscapes for People, Food and Nature Initiative. Chapter 7: “Integrated landscape initiatives in practice: assessing experiences from 191 landscapes in Africa and Latin America” is a comparative analysis that builds on two existing reviews of landscape initiatives in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean.

Real change: tropical forests, development and climate

…The Sustainable Tropics Alliance has investigated challenges and opportunities in eight regions in Brazil, Peru, Mexico, Indonesia, Kenya and Colombia. A new report released in connection with the Global Landscapes Forum summarizes the findings of on-the-ground research that shows how a new low emission rural development (“LED-R”) model can work. It also shows how Sustainable Tropics Alliance member organizations are working for change. For example: providing alternative finance for smallholders in Chiapas in Mexico to help them put sustainable resource management into practice; working with indigenous people in Peru to develop their Good Life Plan, which sets out priorities for 10 years; and helping Amazon states in Brazil to monitor deforestation.

Collaborative Partnership on Forests continues its strong support for the Global Landscapes Forum
At the closing plenary of the Global Landscapes Forum, a statement from the Chair of the CPF, Eduardo Rojas-Briales, affirms that members of the CPF, collectively and individually, are working at policy level and on the ground in integrated landscape management for climate change adaptation and mitigation, for the achievement of the sustainable development goals and to progress toward a green economy.

Impressions & presentations from the Global Landscape Forum, Lima
The second Global Landscapes Forum convened in Lima on 6 December where, together with HIVOS, we hosted the session Making the case for organic farming and for a low external input sustainable agriculture as climate-smart landscape solutions. Attended by approximately 100 people, presenters and panelists highlighted a number of successful landscape initiatives based on resilient and affordable agricultural practices, participatory research and showed how farmer-centered methodologies work in practice.

CCAL é apresentado na COP20 em Lima no Peru
Em meio aos diversos mecanismos e propostas apresentadas durante a COP20 no combate às mudanças climáticas, o IPAM lança em dois Eventos Paralelos um sistema de Monitoramento, Registro e Verificação (MRV) para os estados interessados em medir seus estoques de carbono. A primeira apresentação do CCAL ocorreu no Fórum Global de Paisagens na COP20 no Side Event – Global Landscapes Forum. O segundo evento paralelo de apresentação da ferramenta CCAL foi o – Gestão de paisagens florestais para retornos múltiplos: Ferramentas de monitoramento de carbono e analises financeiras simplificadas.
