Tea farming in Kenya could be devastated by the impact of climate change unless new climate-smart agriculture is adopted. The use of an assessment tool developed by EcoAgriculture Partners and the Rainforest Alliance, which is working to transition to a landscape management approach in this region, can help identify the strengths of current activities and […]

  • A frank look at forests, agriculture and carbon

A CGIAR report reflects on the unavoidable tradeoffs between agriculture and forestry for carbon mitigation. The report argues that adding a socio-political context when analyzing strategies is key to effective decision-making. Maintaining forests may not always be preferable to use as agricultural land depending on a variety of factors. Read the full post here. Original […]

The world is changing, perhaps more rapidly than we are currently willing to acknowledge. The growth of food demand, driven by a growing and richer global population, is creating a big pull to intensify agricultural production, at the same time as there is increasing competition for land for other purposes (e.g. roads, cities, biofuels, etc.). […]

  • Gas pooling: The best way to measure soil emissions more efficiently?

Greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural soils vary greatly over space and time, but CCAFS researchers in Kenya have found a way to more efficiently measure varying emissions from diverse landscapes- via gas pooling. Agricultural soils are major sources of carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide, which are released when fertilizers are transformed by microbial processes in […]

  • Tropical Peat Swamp Forests: How land use change affects methane and carbon emissions

In Southeast Asia, 25 percent of deforestation occurs in peat swamp forests and is driven by wood production and a demand for land for agricultural production. Techniques that facilitate deforestation, such as drainage ditches which lower the groundwater level, may affect peat methane emission fluxes. A study by Kristell Hergoualc’h and Louis Verchot at the […]
