There is a definite role for agriculture to play in climate change mitigation, but still far too little information on the scale of its potential contribution. This was the overriding message from yesterday’s COP 19 side event Scaling up Climate Smart Agriculture: policies, development and mitigation potentials, hosted by the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF). The […]

What is it about agriculture that the world finds so hard? We eat its products every day, after all. Yet when it comes to adopting sensible policies for ensuring that people get fed, that farmers can make a living, and that agriculture does not contribute unnecessarily to climate change, the world’s diplomats are frankly clueless. […]

A recent study of two villages in Cameroon indicates that small farmers there are not far from having the capacity to make REDD+ projects work in their communities. As the links between agriculture and climate change are discussed at the COP19 global climate conference and at the Global Landscapes Forum, the research shows how projects […]

I came to the Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) to learn. To learn from the technical experts, and from those who know how things look on the ground. I am confident that the landscapes forum is the right place to be. Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) has been mentioned a number of times at the GLF, and is […]

As I sit inside the negotiating chambers of the climate talks in Warsaw, I am watching yet again a huge potential solution to climate concerns being neglected. Despite a united effort from the global agricultural community since 2009 to commit to climate change solutions, the world’s farmers continue to be sidelined for yet another year. […]

video platformvideo managementvideo solutionsvideo player John Obuom and Poline Achieng’ Omondi are talking about their goats to a group of visitors that includes me. Turns out, cross-breeding local goats with Gala goats increases size, and cross-breeding Red Massai sheep with local sheep increases tolerance to heat and parasites. The result is a dramatically growing family income. Local […]
